matt skiba - mellos diner, ottawa, canada, june 15, 1999 This shot was taken after eating breakfast with Lustre King and 2/3 of Alkaline Trio (Matt and Glenn) at the greasy spoon by day, hooker hangout by night.
Anyhow, Akaline Trio, Lustre King and locals Weights & Measures played an intimate show the night before at Molly McGuires -- a pseudo skid bar turned live music venue.
How intimate you ask? Twenty-seven paid, plus a handful of regulars who helped increase the bar sales and make it worthwhile for the owners, thankfully.
Why only 27 people? Well, the show was booked on short notice, it was 19-and-over only and Alkaline Trio hadn't blown up yet in the US. (I don't think they've blown up in Canada yet...) Lustre King were amazing, Alkaline Trio were pretty good and I seem to recall Weights and Measures injuring themselves or breaking something, always a sign of a good show for them.
This was one of the first "punk" shows at Mollys and it soon became a reasonably priced, decent sounding, all ages and licenced music venue seeing several dozen other bands grace the stage from The Promise Ring to Dismemberment Plan to Kid Dynamite to the final show with Kill Sadie. Eventually the ownership changed. A few times. As did the name -- Molly's In The Market, Eclipse and now Manhattan's, though the doors were locked and they had "closed for renovations" signs up when i biked by last night.
Now that I think about it both times I have eaten breakfast with Alkaline Trio (the next was at MacRock, April 2000) Dan was sleeping in the van. I guess he's not a morning person... I'll post post-breakfast photos from that time soon, Matt trying to bite/lick Bill from Discount's nipple (through his shirt... no porn here.)
