this is from one of two shows Skinny Puppy played that year at Porter Hall. i am pretty sure this was from the first one, with Edward Ka-spell of the Legendary Pink Dots opening. the second show saw Severed Heads open, Monday November 17, 1986.

Skinny Puppy (and Tackhead) were my first exposure to sampling and "industrial" music and i was enamoured. (yea Nettwerk! well, Puppy, Tackhead and Consolidated are Nettwerk's only listenable release eons away from the dreck the spew these days...) the music was aggressive, political, yet more dense, more challenging, and more "musical" than the hardcore punk of the time. to put this in context, this was just as the term "alternative" was coined, several years before it grew into the misnomer that it is today.

biggest Skinny Puppy regret - missing their first area performance at Hull's intimate Club Zinc a year or two prior. i hadn't really heard of them. i remember walking by the show and hearing the noise, but opting for our predisposed destination - a Hillcrest high school pub where the admission was half, the ID-ing non-existent and the entertainment a mediocre mod band.

best Skinny Puppy experiences - interviewing cEvin Key for CKCU and being thrown by his use of the term "skullfuck" live on-air. an amazing mix of Skinny Puppy's "Digit" and the Butthole Surfer's "American Woman" while DJing at Oliver's Pub at Carleton University - my only successful attempt (albeit accidental) at beatmixing. dead rats.
