photo of the day

the front steps of my house, on a sunny summer day, 1992. my goal is to make these steps the most famous in punk rock.

not really, but it has sort of ended up that way. they have been a primary location to shoot bands after staying up all night talking, eating pasta, playing old school video games, watching movies, eating breakfast and packing up the van.

Sparkmarker started it all with a portrait which ended up on a single -- Kim subconciously flipping over a milk crate and sitting on it Brian Baker style. We realized that half way through the shoot and played up the Minor Threat angle and the seeds were sewn. Avail, Braid, Cub, Franklin, Tim Kinsella, Shotmaker, Trans Am have all been immortalized there too. The Riff Randells chose to pay homage to their hometown heroes a decade later, emulating the Sparkmarket shot.

Then we circumnavigate the house... Joan of Arc on my east neighbours' lawn. Dillinger 4, Fifth Hour Hero, and a huge garbage bag of dumpstered donuts at 2am on my front lawn. Atom on the hood of his mom's car out front, his package on the ground in my parking space around the back. Discount pulling karate poses in the middle of the street. Botch dodging cars in the middle of the intersection. Red Sugar on the corner in the snow. The Promise Ring on a bulldozer parked around the corner during construction season. Ethel Meserve at the government buildings across the street. Goodbye Blue Monday, Circus Lupus and Braid (holding all their luggage and bedding) in the middle of the cross street. Dillinger Escape Plan, Discount, Atom on the west neighbours' lawn. Braid, Sweep The Leg Johnny, the Spaceheads and a reluctant Kill Sadie in the parking area on the north side. 8 Bark, New Bomb Turks, Dillinger 4, the Strike, Spaceheads on the back porch...

And I've had help from others -- Chrissie Piper shooting the Promise Ring horsing around on the corner lawn, Hoover shooting their van from the porch.

It's convenient, free and the light is generally good.

I'll probably miss this place when i move. At least i'll be able to assemble a complete 360 degree image of the exterior thru band portraits. When i move, i'll definately look for a house with a good porch, but also an interior studio space as well.
